Title: Slean in L.A. with the New CD! Yay!
Post by Paul on Jul 8th, 2004, 2:52am
I missed her first show at Genghis on Tuesday, but I caught her at the Hotel Cafe Wednesday night.  As always, an enthralling performance.  After nearly 4 years of not seeing her, I thought I was lucky to just see her in January in L.A., but now she's doing shows left and right for the next month.  And that's not the best part.  She had promo copies of Day One and was giving them out for free at the show!

Sarah Harmer's "You Were Here" was my favorite album from 2000, and Peter Prilesnik's deft touch is apparent on this album...it's like Sarah's Harmer and Slean birthed a baby when they toured with Feisty back in 2000, and just now it is being released to the world as Day One.  This has been a damn fine year for me as far as album purchases go, but Slean's album has claimed its place in the top 5 already.

You must get thee to L.A. at some point this month, even if you're in freakin' Iceland, to see Ms. Slean and get a copy of the CD.  And, no, you can't have mine.

If there was any incentive to go to Calfiornia this would be it. :)

What's the tracklist and was there any art of any kind or was it just a cd-r?

The CD looks like a Warner promotional item, with all the pertinent information printed on the face, including the tracklisting, the copyright info, the production and engineering info, and the warner logo.  There's also a one-sleeve insert in the jewel case with a Photo-Painting collage of Sarah's head, the title of the cd, and the tracklisting.

The tracklist is:
Pilgrim
Lucky Me
Mary
California
Day One
Out in the Park
Vertigo
When Another Midnight
The Score
Your Wish Is My Wish
Wake Up

I'd give my right arm for a copy. ;D  Hopefully she'll have some copies left for her Toronto show.

yup yup. good disc. interesting production... there weren't a lot of people there when she was on, but the place was probably at least 1/2 full or more. not bad for the 1st act at the hotel cafe. i think she went through about a box of the cds..not sure how many that is, but the box was empty and sitting there when i left.

I'm pretty sure she's using the discs to shop around the album in hopes for a U.S. record deal.

If anyone has an extra copy floating around I'd love to have one. :)

I don't want to cause a rukus, but I heard a 30 second clip of the recording of Lucky Me, which is apparently the first single...and...uhhh, it wasn't very good. It sounded like a cheap remix. I seriously hope this wasn't the final version. What I heard was not Sarah Slean.

that's it.

Very pop, in my opinion.  It's not terrible, I'm sure it will grow on us.  It's just a bit of a departure from what we are used to.

Though, I must admit the squeaky back-up singers are a little scary.   ;)

I just hope it's not an indication of the tone of the rest of the album. California's instrumentation seems to be a bit on the cold side as well. I'm just getting jumpy, I've been waiting for this album for almost a year and a half now and my hopes are extermely high. Maybe we'll get another version of Lucky Me on the single. It's an excellent song at it's core, I'd love a stripped down version.

Hey everyone... I'm new here, but I've been a fan of Sarah's for a few years.  I didn't even know she was working on a new album until I checked her site yesterday to find that new message.  Does anyone know if Hawksley Workman produced this one?

According to the promo, the album was co-produced by Peter Prilesnik (sarah harmer), Dan Kurtz, and Sarah Slean.

The album is quite deliciously varied.  "Lucky Me" took me by surprise because it is markedly different from the live version...it's got a revved up, pop-ska-polka feel which I can understand might turn off some fans, but I found it to be fun and funny.  "California" has a Daniel Lanois/Malcolm Burn atmosphere; "Mary" reminds me of Patty Griffin's "Christina"; a handful of the songs let the cabaret-style shine through; and there are others that put me in mind of Jon Brion, Kate Bush, and Danny Elfman.  The diversity in production is great and, I think, showcases the many sides of Sarah quite well.

Last night's show at Tangier was fine, although the attendance was a bit sparse.  Tonight's show at Genghis Cohen was about 3/4 full and the audience was VERY appreciative which made for a great performance from Sarah.  She pulled out Universe, to the delight of me and my friend Kyler, who has the E.P., but had never seen Sarah until tonight.  She was gushing about Sarah after the show, and Kyler's friend and my cousin both enjoyed the concert too, so I think we've got some new fans.

Oh, and the crowd loved her so much, we even got an encore of Edelweiss!

I think everyone is being a little harsh with "Lucky Me". Yes, certainly it's not along the same lines of what we are used to from Sarah... but it's definitely not for the worse. (The bare bones live version is suppose to be fun... the new mix, is just that-- fun) Sarah is all about changing herself and trying something new... from what I've heard so far (only being "California" and "Lucky Me"). I'm actually pretty impressed with it. Sarah has yet again transformed her sound, yet keeping it with her flair.

As for someone saying "California" was a little cold, I actually like this version better then the live. (albeit, I love her live the best... but still). The methodic beats and steely detachment of the song, is what shows the real emotion to me. Especially the meaning behind the song. I'm really impressed with the desolation and regret that can be felt in this song. But then again, that's just me and we all have our certain tastes.

In all, I'm still amped to hear this full album and will no doubt be more then impressed when I hear it all for the first time. Is this another "Universe" cd? No. But I would be disappointed in Sarah if it was; she's not one to stagnate.

I enjoy your reviews ppl.

Out of the new material I have heard her play Lucky Me is my fave.  It is upbeat almost polkaish as someone else mentioned and I'm fine with that.  :)

Il have to be paitient to hear the recorded version and the rest of the fourth coming album.  My hands and ears are a bit tired with the prodigy right now.

Cameron Bay.

figured it out. it's from "The Sound Of Music" and called Edelweiss...apparently sarah's done it a lot in the past and gotten a lot of people to sing it along with her (or so she said on wednesday)
