Title: Sarah Harmer - new cd
Post by obi-john on Mar 25th, 2004, 4:07pm
:) new cd's from favorite artists make me quite happy.  This one being now exception.  Wondering if anyone else out there has bought it and what you think of it.
Personnally I think its a great album.  Not as good as the last one, but hey, thats to be expected.

figure this is relevant since Sarah H.  helped out Sarah S. a while back.  1 degree of seperation I guess you could say.

Well I'm not a bigest fan of her, maybe becouse i liss only a few songs. Still waiting for new Sarah album, I hope that rec company don't change her artist look, and won't make her another Tori Amos.

It all went downhill for me after weeping tile split... but I consider it a very gentle sloping hillside.  Sarah Harmer is a great musician and I love listening to her music... but I probably won't buy the album.

"I hope that rec company don't change her artist look, and won't make her another Tori Amos."

i'm sure Sarah wouldn't let that happen :)

tori is tori, and sarah is sarah. they might both play piano, but it's like comparing mozart to debussy. just too different.

(hello. nice to meet everyone. :))

i like them both very much, but for different reasons.

i picked up the sarah harmer on friday and it's been quite interesting to listen to. naturally, i'm trying to compare it to you were here but haven't had enough time to digest it yet.

cheers,
matthew.

i disagree with that statement....most of the material she has done after weeping tile, is what she wrote for weeping tile. its just not as rocked out

i've been an harmer fan for about 10 years now and she keeps getting better and better...seeing her come out with new material is great!

her show in kingston on friday was brilliant.

ack, my cookies are doing something weird, lol....I haven't been able to log in for  forever....now it says I'm a guest....oh well. Anyway hello to everyone, I haven't been here for a while. I bought Sarah Harmer's new cd, I love it, although I might have to agree with obi-john and say it's not as great as the first but I still love it....I think it's softer and folkier...if that's even a word...it's full of raw emotion, it's like she's read my thoughts and put them paper  ;).... Fave songs: Almost, Greeting Card Aisle, New Enemy. I first heard Sarah H when I heard Weeping Tile's south of me....but I didn't become a fan until I heard Don't Get Your Back Up...stupid me, lol....she's great :)

Has anyone else noticed that You Were Here is a Spring/Summer album and All of Our Names is much more of an Autumn/Winter album? ....  I feel like I should be curled up in a blanket with some hot tea while listening to a few of the new tracks.

The two albums are definitely different. While "You Were Here" was chalked full of bright ditties perfect for spring and summer, I find "All of Our Names" is more of a fall/winter album (to put it seasonally). Sarah has definitely matured in both her technical skills and songwriting. Lyrically speaking, "Names" tends to be a bit more socially conscious with songs such as Dandelions in Bullet Holes (Everytime on "You Were Here" was quite socially conscious but was not written by Sarah). I think the album is great...I find myself drawn to "Names" because, like her, i've grown a bit in these past few years since her last album and have become more socially conscious and attentive. I still appreciate "You Were Here" and listen to it quite a bit but I find "Names" communicates more to me. I'd highly recommend it. And, if you can only listen to one song off of that album, make it Dandelions in Bullet Holes - beautifully written.

"make it Dandelions in Bullet Holes - beautifully written. "

i first heard the song live last april at the "one big no" concert in april, and then the next day again at a great solo concert.  I knew it was going to be my favorite on the album and it is :)

Well, this CD is #1: good...#2: different.

#1: is the easy part

#2: takes time

I am proud to have someone so talented vocally and melodically on our side of the border.
Sarah Harmer is one of the best folk/rockers we have.

I love,

Jay

Okay this is not that important but I wanted to share....I work at my Uni's radio station and my manager e-mailed info to call Universal to set up an interview with Sarah Harmer. But I misunderstood thinking that I already got the interview but had to arrange for when and where kinda thing. So here I was having a heart-attack, thinking I'm gonna be interviewing Sarah Harmer!! Then I speak to this guy who sets up press for her, and he's like sorry, Sarah isn't doing any interviews...so I was a bit confused, I think he could hear my confusion over the phone and told me to have my manager call him. Ack! LOL, I was so damned excited, this would have been my very first interview....so now I'm waiting for a reply from my manager...I hope it's good news but I doubt it will be  :(

i went to the sarah harmer show in toronto on tuesday night. it was excellent. actually beyond excellent.
first of all i hadnt seen heyden before. he was sooo good. i especially liked his song about being home along while getting robbed. he was really cool for sure.
and then there was sarah...she is always cool, but i have to say as this was the first full length show i had seen of hers (one big no and >play dont really count) even her recorded stuff doesnt do her justice. she makes beautiful music and thats that.
and another nice treat was where i had expected the lovely maury lafoy was the sleaner's own john dinsmore on stage...the whole band was great and the whole night, on top of being my last exam day, was amazing. what a way to start the summer. sigh.

OH! I would love to see Hayden!

As for Sarah Harmer I saw her at the Folk Festival here in Calgary last year and she was brilliant! And as an aside, I used to work at HMV all through uni' and my manager grew up in the same town as Sarah Harmer and used to smoke a lot of weed with her.  Very glam, no?

Well Lindsay, it's not terribly interesting but, I am a psychology major with a minor in Family Studies...  I have this weird compulsion to analyze and figure out everyone I know, so psychology definitely suits me.

The Hayden/Harmer show is this Saturday, so I will certainly let you all know how it went once it's through.  I am pretty excited to see Hayden again and I haven't seen Sarah live so I am sure I will get a treat there as well.

Simon Wilcox is coming to town on Friday and I just found out that Ridley Bent will be playing on thursday, so it could be an action packed weekend.

How's that not interesting Nikolita? People are the most interesting, intriguing and awe-inspiring things. I'm doing combined honours in Psychology and Social Anthropology. I also keep myself busy by taking electives at the local art college.

I think Names is an awesome album.  Really very good.  It is a bit slower than the first, but the songwriting is even better.

I saw her at the Hilton hotel in Reno, Nevada (needless to say, she was AMAZING).  The "venue" was in the middle of the casino and next to two bars.  So there were many buzzed people.  But even though the majority of the people didn't know who she was, they were quite receptive and gave great applause after each song.

sorry folks!  I wrote about it on my blog, but forgot to tell you all as well.  Here's what I wrote on Monday May 10 (sorry, it's a little gushing):

Quote:
Bliss.

My eyes travelled him for two incredibly blissful days. They got lost wandering through the mass of brown curls atop his head – housing two tender hazel eyes that both smile mischievously and furrow with heartbreak in the same moment, somehow always managing to catch the light. Oh, but they found their way again after finding his grin, both sheepish and confident - held comfortably inside a perpetual 2-day scruff of a half-beard.

My eyes travelled him. Sojourning over his knuckles and resting in the crook between his thumb and forefinger as he strummed.

My eyes travelled. Mostly with the lids firmly shut – letting my ears take a turn at the wheel. Oh how I do hear better with my eyes closed.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m talking about Hayden. I saw him open for Sarah Harmer last night, which was an excellent show by all regards… somewhat surprisingly. I am not a huge Sarah Harmer fan (I am more fond of her work with her previous band, Weeping Tile) but she put on a great set, even playing “Room with the Sir John A View” which has to be my all-time favourite Weeping Tile song.

John Dinsmore was playing bass, as I knew he would be. I think he is starting to recognise me. He was originally NQ Arbuckle’s bassist, but when NQ basically disappeared from the music scene, John joined NQ’s friend Sarah Slean on her Nightbugs tour and became a regular member of her band. This was a natural follow-through to Danny Michel’s band, which the rest of Sarah Slean’s band already acted as.

Having been to 3 or 4 Sarah Slean shows, 2 Danny Michel shows and now Sarah Harmer’s show with John Dinsmore playing, it’s not really surprising that he recognises me. I usually stand near the front and I have a tendency to look more at the band members than I do the singer. I found, after a while, that John and I were playing eye-tag near the end of the show and he had that look about him like “I think I know her from somewhere.”

But anyway, we were talking about Hayden.

He put on a great show, even as the opener, it’s just unfortunate that the audience wasn’t more courteous. He played mostly from the new album but excited me immensely when he played Dynamite Walls and Between Us to Hold. Ah, such beautiful songs.

And today. I won two tickets to a CBC Radio 3 recording session where Hayden played a few songs and was interviewed in front of our small audience of approximately 30-40 fans in the studio. It was SO cool! The show was so small and intimate and the audience members got to ask questions and everything!

Before the show, a guy was outside asking the fans questions about Hayden. When he asked me to describe Hayden’s music I gave him some dumb non-eloquent answer (it was SO on-the-spot) that went along the lines of “Hayden is a big teddy bear that sings beautiful romantic songs with an edge and a guitar.” Matthew and I ended up chatting with the guy off-record outside the studio for a bit about music in general which was cool.

After the show, he was again waiting outside with his recorder and it was so funny because he picked us out and was like “You two! I have a few more questions to ask you!” It was so funny because he didn’t even consider the group leaving in front of us. It pays to be friendly, I suppose.

So yeah, if you want to hear my geekiness and Hayden’s loveliness all within the same hour, tune in next Saturday after 7:30pm to CBC radio three. I’ll give more info about it later. They were also taking pictures that they will post on the CBC radio 3 website, so I might just be there too. It’s kind of exciting.

Anyway. Hayden’s album “Elk Lake Serenade” comes out tomorrow. How appropriate that it should arrive in the late spring when all the trees are bursting with love blossoms and pheremones are leaping frantically between all the young, happy, single people.

And Elk Lake Serenade is an awesome album... I haven't been able to stop listening to it.  If you have it, check the liner notes and you'll see some familiar names.  Drew Birston, Kevin Fox, Karen Graves, and Noah Mintz have all worked with Sarah Slean.
