Title: Tonight's Show Post by Jason on Dec 17th, 2003, 9:32pm Hey all, just got back from the concert. :) Sarah played all new songs which was a refreshing change. Nathan Lawr played with Sarah during the Neil Young cover and 'Hanging Around'. She also played along with Oh Suzanna during 'Alabaster'. * means I'm guessing the title. ;D Wilderness I'll Never Smile again Mary* The Park* Pilgrim* Neil Young cover, forgot the title Hanging Around (Nathan's song) Your Wish Is My Wish Lucky Me (aka the polka song) |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by Jason on Dec 17th, 2003, 11:37pm I'm getting a Blue Parade vibe from many of the new songs...kind of slow and sad sounding. Mary and Lucky Me were definitely more livelier which I enjoyed quite a lot. :) |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by ProdigyBoy on Dec 18th, 2003, 12:09am jason, the titles in my head were the same :) Wilderness I really liked this tune. The way she sings into the chorus is great. I'll Never Smile again I was hoping she would do this one and as soon as she mentioned "this next one written by a women from Toronto, she dead now, woo!?...". It didn't give me an errie feeling at all but drew to mind having a slow dance. Drew to mind dancing with my grandma which leads to the next song Mary* The name of Sarah's grandmother who took the boat trip across with the family coming to Canada. Sarah explained how they were all sick but her grandma was so excited that she was now in Canada. This song was really upbeat and I'm not sure if somelines tied to the Mother Mary at all. It was one my faves of the night. The Park* I had no idea what was going on here.... my mind has it jumbled with.... Pilgrim* which was the main word i captured through that song. I think she sang about the animals aswell. Nathan entered the stage, tuned the guitar and reminded Sarah next they are doing a Neil Young cover I don't recall the title but I don't think I was familuar with the original. Hanging Around (Nathan's song) This went lovely but I thought the title was Walking On. =p Your Wish Is My Wish A song Sarah descibed to be about a romance she had, with a boy she met in her times up in the woods. She joked how she is geneticaly programed to have these romances, and to have these romances doomed. Lucky Me (aka the polka song) A great one to end with but Sarah was uncertain of the words "no? yes?..". I expected something big of NightBugs to end her set but this did very well. She made a pretty quick exit to the backstage after retreiving her scarf. I thought she may have needed to use the bathroom. She stated a few times during the show how nervous or scarred she was. I recall her not liking fear in music and I don't know what she was worried about. Being on stage again? new material? For her surprise appearance with the surprise preformer, Oh Suzana, Sarah skipped out doing a solo. She was being rather shy (or moddest again) and after that song wouldn't be lured on stage again. You could hear her from behind stage saying she wasn't coming out and greeting suzana after the song. It was a real nice show put on and had a great crowd turn out. The crowd seemed rather friendly. As soon as I passed into through the rivoli doors Sarah was chatting to the bartending girl (aka bartender). At first I wasn't 100% sure if it was Sarah or my eyes tricking me that one of the other syling ladies had taken on her image. I didn't say hello as I was just ordering a drink and had made a new friend (david porteous) in line. She seemed comfortable. Everyone played great over the night. Hannah Sung (muchmusic) provied the music between acts that were up mixs of mainy hiphop songs. It was done really well and I was happy that I got to speak to her a bit before leaving. She's very sweet. I took pictures of the event and have them hosted here: http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4288298603&congratulation_page=Y I only took a handfull of Sarah's bc i was just following the songs and forgot about the camera most of the time. There were other ppl going hardcore with the photography. The pic with Nathan made her blink so I left the flash off for pretty much the remainder of the night. There are many of Emm Gryner but I took few of her band. I'm horrible =p. First time I have caught a complete set of her although I never through out her Access and Watch magazine artiles from 6 yrs ago? The ladies took care of things on Queen Street. Cameron Bay. |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by heavens to betsy on Dec 18th, 2003, 9:42am ahhhhh, the show. so different. so exciting. sarah, i thought, was of a very different mood than her usual giggly, happy self. she didnt seem unhappy, but as forementioned, she said she was still not used to being back in the city, with crowds etc. she was definitely into her songs though as per usual, and the friends i brought, who had all never seen, and barely heard, her before were completely impressed and blown away. i thought all the new songs were so good. last night the ones she chose seemed to have more of a cabaret feel to them, more so than radio pop or slow meloncholic ballad..maybe its her 'boy wonder' influence. my only wish was that it was her own show. maybe my wish is her wish too... |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by Blizzob on Dec 18th, 2003, 11:15am It seems as though I am not in the know as to when and where Sarah is performing. Where do you guys get your information? |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by ProdigyBoy on Dec 18th, 2003, 12:42pm blizz, i wasnt exactly either she's not on tour or anything really now. upcoming shows are normaly posted on fan pages like littleslean.com or may be mentioned in places like this. i think there are also mailing lists to consider. with regards to it being her own show..... i'm not sure if she was quite ready for that yet. i wouldn't have minded alot more slean but i liked the other acts. Her radio Monday show at the Rivoli was on a sharred stage and I thought that went well. it was a long night, and watching LOTR made it a very long day. Cameron Bay. |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by Rich23 on Dec 20th, 2003, 9:56am Hi everyone, just wanted to communicate my experience from the Rivoli Show. In truth, I was excited beyond words. I'd never seen Sarah perform this close before and for this length of time. Although she seemed a little more timid than usual (possibily due to the cabin experience), nevertheless, her usual cuteness and charm were apparent. I was thoroughly in awe and transfixed on her performance as beautiful song after song came out. I especially liked "Lucky Me" at the end (trying to play it by ear). However, I wished that she did play some of her older tunes. It would have been nice to hear one or two of them interspersed with the new delights. As well, although I can understand that people get enthusiastic at performances, I wish that the picture snapping could have been kept to a minimum (one at most per person). Some people, I think took it a little too far. Especially when she said that she wasn't used to city life in a while. Nevertheless, I thought that her music, voice and lyrics were great. In truth, I've never seen a performance where someone is so absorbed into their music and is able to impart those feelings to the audience. I look forward to the next concert whenever it may be. I'm hoping it's soon. |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by Nikolita on Dec 20th, 2003, 11:17am Rich, I totally know what you mean. I became particularly annoyed at a recent Danny Michel show where the same thing happened (but to such a crippling degree that Danny stopped in the middle of a song.) I heard a Hawksley story that he pointed to one photographer in the middle of a song and said "You! you there. that's enough. Seriously, you're done." What do we go to shows for? The music right? So then why aren't we using our ears? And if you are interested in a few photos, that's fine, but don't spend the whole time behind the lens because then you aren't even enjoying the show... you are, I don't know, trying to make a memory for later or gain respect or something for having the most pictures, when in reality it annoys everyone around you PLUS the musician. that's my two cents! take care! ~nicole g |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by Rich23 on Dec 21st, 2003, 9:59am Right on Nik. Happy someone agrees. Of course, Sarah is also what I like to call an absorbed performer since in order to create a relaxed environment for herself, she sort of sinks into her music while playing it (of course, I'm speculating here). I still try to do the same thing when I perform, unfortunately, my fingers are so shaky that it often doesn't fully work. The point is (and I have one) that unless you are a performer, it's tough to understand what an artist feels up there. Thus, camera shots can just add to the distraction of taking the artist away from the place of solace that he or she has created for themselves during their performances. It's sort of like being awoken from a nice dream by your alarm clock. As well, JuliewithnoA, for Sarah's most recent tour dates, I would check out LastYearswar's website. |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by ProdigyBoy on Dec 21st, 2003, 12:26pm just on the picturing taking bit. some valid points about it comeing to the point of a distraction. I don't have a problem with it if: 1. The flash is off (or not any worse then the lighting) 2. The photographer doesn't interfere with the audience in setting up. I took a total of 6 pictures of Sarah at the rivoli as i posted above. She's only playing in 2 of them and the rest are shots before or after songs. One in which I did have the flash on and she was playing was so Oh Suzana could be in the pic. The stage lighting would not have been strong enough to capture her. My falsh did make her blink one time when she chatting. I kept it off for most the night after that. I took alot of pics during emm gryner's set but i doubt her stage noticed dispite me being in the front rows. Cameron |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by Nikolita on Dec 21st, 2003, 1:34pm oh cameron! I hope you don't think we were attacking you in particular! I think what we are saying (or at least I am) is those people who are constantly snapping pictures (usually with a flash), are right in the artists face (front and center) and in the way of other fans... those people are annoying. not you! I think the amount you took and the way you took them was indeed tasteful. ~nik |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by Rich23 on Dec 21st, 2003, 3:37pm I agree with Nikolita. Plus, the important thing is that when you realized that she blinked after the flash, you were nice and polite enough not to use it as much. Good going man! |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by ProdigyBoy on Dec 21st, 2003, 6:35pm haha thanks rich and nik :) I didn't think it was a personal argument and it was one which I agreed with you both to fair degree. Speaking of photographs, i wonder if Sarah noted they had an autographed picture of herself up behind the bar. She was the only one up there in the summer. I currious to hear her play again. I wonder what those new songs would sound like with the band and if she has any other variations ready to be made to them. It wouldn't even hurt to hear them the exact same way to capture all what was going on. She had a funny quote about record lables are going to hate her or something silly like that. Cameron Bay. |

Title: Re: Tonight's Show Post by Nikolita on Dec 21st, 2003, 10:32pm I can't remember who it was... but someone recently said that they jokingly said to sarah after she autographed a photo "I wonder how much this would sell on ebay" (speaking of autographed photos) and recently I saw some autographed photos on ebay... didn't look like they were very hot sellers though. ~nicole g |
