Title: The Casbah show (hamilton) Post by Felicity on May 3rd, 2002, 6:05am Wow, wow, wow!! What a fantastic show! I'll try and remember everything... The opening act was Catherine Rose (Ross? not sure which). I thought she was awesome. the crowd wasn't very receptive at the start, but i think she won them over by the end, especially with her song 'I married Myself'. I would've bought her record, but i couldn't find the merch table! ??? Anyhow, her voice was beautiful and she had a great sense of humor. i think i was the only one laughing at her jokes. She's worth checking out if you haven't seen / heard of her before. Well, then sarah came on, and played an absolutely incredible set. She made mention of how the leafs were being slaughtered and how we should drink our sadness away, and said as a side note that she liked whisky *hint hint*. A few songs later the bartender approached the stage with a whisky someone had purchased for her. :) Despite what had been said about the Trinity show, Sarah was very open, friendly and chatty during the show. She was so funny, and her manerisms while she played the piano were adorable. Stand out songs: Bank accounts (WOW!), sweet ones, book smart, street stupid,.... ah, i'm just going to end up listing them all! I thought she did a fantastic job, and can't wait til the next show. I took some pictures, but limited it to a few because i was sitting directly facing her and didn't want to blind her w/ my double-flash, so i usually waited until her eyes were closed to take a few quick shots. I was going to post them here, but thought it would be unfair to people with a slow connection. so I'll upload them to a site and be right back to post the address. Overall, I was 150% impressed by the show. And if anyone knows where I can pick up catherine's album, let me know! I'm going to go search for a website for her now. ;) .:Steph:. |

Title: Re: The Casbah show (hamilton) Post by pianoman on May 3rd, 2002, 10:05am Hi Felicity, Thanks for the pictures. Wow, you had great seats. Getting to Hamilton a little late, my girlfriend and I found good standing space behind the sound booth for what was yet another great concert. Yeah, I definitely found she was much more relaxed and comfortable at this concert than she was at the Toronto/Trinity performance. Whether it was the alcohol or the smaller crowd, she seemed much more at ease. Her best song of the night (in my mind at least) was Drastic Measures, which really got the crowd going. And, ah, my advice to anyone going to a future Sarah Slean concert, turn OFF your cell phones before the show. She was just a few notes into St. Francis when someone's cell phone from the front started to ring. Let me say that Sarah wasn't too impressed and actually stopped the whole song and called the person lame (way to go Sarah!). On the whole, I found the audience pretty rude as a lot of people were talking during her set (or maybe that was just the people at the back). And oh, the merchandise table was at the back, on the right side of the pool table (if you were looking from the stage). It was interesting to hear the songs performed without the stings and horns - something that I particularly liked in many respects. I also found Sarah's voice sounding a little more like her work on the indie CDs, not as smoking or jazzy as she was last week - I don't know why and maybe I'm wrong. Overall, a very cool and strong performance by the night bugs, but the sound mix wasn't as great as you could barely hear the backup vocals (again, I was at the back, so maybe that's why). She performed two new songs, but I can't remember their names. Great tunes, though. Looking forward to the next CD. Well, that's about it. Bottom line: great performance, lame audience. |

Title: Re: The Casbah show (hamilton) Post by guyfromARGYLEROAD on May 3rd, 2002, 10:52am ::) #1, I'm jealous... #2, the reason I MADE SURE to go to the Trinity show was because I KNEW it would be amazing, a REAL grand piano. n such. Good pics I might add. I hope to see her again sometime soon, J |

Title: Re: The Casbah show (hamilton) Post by Felicity on May 3rd, 2002, 2:15pm Pianoman: I know! People kept talking and laughing during the set. >:( I couldn't believe it! During Kathryn Rose, people at the front table right in front of her wouldn't shut up. they kept talking and making fun of her. It was so rude. That cell phone part was awesome! I hate cell phones, so i'm glad that she made a bit of stink about it. ;) Argh! I checked at the back for the merch. i didn't see it! I went there twice. Ah well. :( California was one of her new songs... i don't remember the name of her second one. I wanted to write down the set list, but i forgot a pen. ::) I agree with your overall bottom line. The crowd sucked. But the show rocked. J: thanks for the kudos about the pics. Yeah, my seats were pretty great. ;D I'm jealous of you for getting to hear her stuff on a real grand piano, though! .:Steph:. PS - i'm so glad i finally found this mb. I'd been hanging around the slean site for a while but never discovered this little gem. I'd be busting right now if i couldn't talk about the show with other fans! ;D |

Title: Re: The Casbah show (hamilton) Post by Seraphiel on May 3rd, 2002, 2:55pm Thankyou everyone for the wonderful write ups about the show! Sounds like it was great as usual. A pity that the audience were so rude and lacked respect. Way to go Sarah for calling that mobile phone user lame! :) I was at a Jewel concert once where that happened and Jewel stopped the story she was in the middle of telling, located the offender in the audience and told them off. :) It is rude and thoughtless for the other members of the audience. |

Title: Re: The Casbah show (hamilton) Post by gorbecki on May 3rd, 2002, 9:20pm hello I thought it was a really nice show... I went to the one in Toronto too and I liked both for diff reasons. I took some photos and I'll try and post them here later if they work out (problems w/ camera... crossing fingers...) I am curious what the name of the song was... i think there was a part where it said 'I want you by my side' or something to that effect? does anyone know the title of that song? I think it was played just before I'm a theif? I am not sure... Let me know if you know the title of that song!!! Thanks :) Becky |
