Title: your opinion please . . .
Post by Nikolita on Apr 12th, 2002, 3:20pm
A few of my friends have described sarah's music in the past as a mix between Tori Amos and Sarah McLaughlin . . . and it makes me cringe!!!   :P  I thought it was just coincidence, but then I was searching the web today and TWO different sites said the same thing.  I prefer to think of her music as completely unique.  What do you think?

PS . . . in my procrastination I found this website:

http://www.smoe.org/jeffw/gallery/script.cgi?page=54&options=D&options=T&options=U

I don't know, I kinda thought it was funny.  There's almost 30 pictures of almost the exact same Sarah.

I definitely think that Sarah has always had a very unique sound. I don't see any similarities between her and Tori or Sarah McLachlan other than the fact that they're all female vocalists who play piano. But then again, almost all female pianists that release music nowadays get compared to Tori or Sarah in one way or another.

I think there are definitely Tori-esque qualities to Slean's piano playing... you know, the way it twinkles and shimmers.  But other than that, there's no real similarities.   :-/

Do you not like Tori or Sarah M.?  I find that many fans of Slean's are fans of Tori's and Sarah M.'s...

It doesn't really matter who plays like whose [already] famous artist, does it ?... The only song I know from Sarah McLachlan is "Black" from the "The X Files Movie Soundtrack". She sings and plays Piano. Like our dear Sarah. Does it mean that Slean copies McLachlan ? I know you all think that's a basic  thought. Of course it's basic. Muse seems to do the same thing like Radiohead's "Ok Computer". But it doesn't matter. The only important thing is that the artist can create its own universe ( ¤oups lol¤ ) and progress in this one or, like Radiohead, find another way of expression.

I am a huge Tori fan and I completely agree with Allison...I guess because of the female/piano thing, you could say that they are similar types of artists, but I consider Tori to be much more of a storyteller, weaving characters with her songs and Sarah Slean to be much more about drawing "pictures" with her music. I adore them both for their own personal styles...

Sarah S and Sara M....are just....well, both chicks named Sarah, but...that's about it! :)

I really like both Tori and Sarah McLaughlin, though Tori quite a bit more.  It's just frustrating when you know an artist and you appreciate everything about their music to be unique, and then they get compared to already known artists . . . I mean, in one way its flattering I guess, but then, they should get their chance to prove themselves first.  I have one friend that just despises Tori's music and had I told him Sarah sounded like Tori, he would have never picked up her cd, and now he LOVES it!!!  ;D

as for the french . . ??? comprends-tu??

I think her first two albums definitely have that Tori influence...and I can see the Sarah links as well.  I just think that Sarah was finding her own musical identity with her first two records...Esp. on Universe there was that generic Lilith element to it...

I think on Nightbugs a lot of her own personality and her own quirks have come out.  I would not make a Tori Amos comparison probably at this point, and I would definitely not make a Sarah McLachlan comparison.

Don't worry Nikolita, I understand everything ;) I studied german for 8 years... and english for 4 years... I stopped school ( after being graduated ) and I lost many words... I have some difficulties to write ( or speak ) in english but I can understand it easier... It's quite strange, isn't it ?  ???

christophe...

I know!! it gets so confusing when you learn more than one language.  Right now I am learning spanish and so many times, if I can't think of the right word, I try to use a french word or even a japanese word!!!  But it is even worse when I try to speak in japanese because I have forgotten almost all of the sentence structures.

I think your english is fine... I understand everything that you write!

sarah does have a unique sound thats completely hers..

however as a HUGE tori amos fan i can see the comparison.

climbing up the walls at first reminded me of tori's *spark* and it was that song that had me completely hooked.. and now when i listen to climbing up the walls i no longer see the connection to *spark* ...

so as a new fan i think your always looking for more of the 'same'
but once you become a hardcore fan you no longer see the similiarities.

Sarah is her own voice, her own style.
People have a hard time dealing with this.
Uniqueness isn't something people are usually fond of.
Example, they have to compare eveything to chicken.
haha

I hope Sarah does well, she will...
She's honest as air...
